<image:title>What's On - 2025: What we achieved together - Thank you for a wonderful and action packed 2025. It has been a busy year so I hope you take some time to rest and feel proud of all that we have achieved collectively this year.</image:title>
<image:caption>This post covers the highlights of 2025, starting with one of our flagship projects the restoration of Mermaid Pools, a creek line downstream of the Manly Warringah War Memorial Memorial Reserve (Manly Dam) which started in 2002. Since then, numerous volunteers such as yourself have toiled to remove weeds and rubbish, plant native species and continuously monitor the area (as well as bake delicious cakes: Thanks Yvette & Carly). In 2025, we focussed on two major areas: Central area: Morning Glory (Ipomoea) has also been successfully targeted in the past year, though it always threatens to return. Also Freesia and other weeds such as Bidens pilosa and Fishbone Fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia) were targeted. Much of the work in the past year has been in this section. A contractor has also worked a bit here and planted some tube stock. Eastern End of the Pool: This rim area, at the bottom of the catchment, is where all weed propagules are funnelled and it is only in recent times that weeds - especially Paspalum and Morning Glory - have been brought under control and ferns have now established. Led by Malcolm Fisher & Mick Houston, the weed maintenance has been successful. Without the efforts of the bushcare group, the Pool would soon return to weeds - as it constantly receives weed propagules through extensive drainage.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's On - Grant Win for Manly Dam! - Great News! We are one of the recipients of the Northern Beaches Council Environment Grant.</image:title>
<image:caption>This grant supports our work of many years and recognises the immense biodiversity that exists in the Manly Dam Catchment. The purpose of this grant is to help us share this biodiversity with the community in an educational program that we call “Backyard Biodiversity: Explore, Learn, Protect” The grant will work with an expert to identify some of the wild and wonderful creatures of Manly Dam and help showcase them to the community in respectful and inclusive walking tours to be announced in early 2026. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the important conservation work that the community of volunteers have undertaken over the years to protect this piece of pristine bushland. Watch this space for updates as we make progress.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Manly Warringah War Memorial State Park (Manly Dam) is a precious area of urban bushland, less than 10 km from the Sydney CBD, that’s rich in biodiversity and beauty. The Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee has used a Federal Government and a Northern Beaches Council Grant (supplemented by ACF) to commission some of Australia's top ecologists to survey, monitor and record the amazing flora and fauna that calls this place home. If you are curious, scroll down to know what you can find here. People who enjoy visiting Manly Dam are also invited to become Citizen Scientists and record and share what they find using the iNaturalist app Manly Dam Biodiversity Project feature. (Image: ©Cassie Thompson) The more data we collect, the greater chance we have of conserving these irreplaceable natural wonders and protecting them from local extinction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fungi - Ghost Fungi</image:title>
<image:caption>Species: Omphalotus nidiformis Image: © Kerry and Trevor Millichamp The Ghost Fungi is a gilled mushroom most notable for its beautiful bioluminescent properties. The fan or funnel shaped fruit bodies are up to 30 cm (12 in) across, with cream-coloured caps overlain with shades of orange, brown, purple, or bluish-black. Its fruit bodies are generally found growing in overlapping clusters on a wide variety of dead or dying trees. It is poisonous and not for eating. This is just one of at least 36 fungal species found in Manly Dam.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birds - Small Birds - Small Birds of Manly Dam</image:title>
<image:caption>Manly Dam comprises a range of different vegetation communities. Plant communities such as the Sandstone heathland and Sandstone swamp provide the most cover and food for small birds and thus, are where most of these tiny birds nest and feed. These communities are commonly found on the ridge tops. Smaller bird species are less abundant but still occur in areas where larger plant communities such as Peppermint Angophora communities are present. Small birds will commonly be found in the understory vegetation in these communities, especially in shaded areas or gullies near water.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birds - Large Birds - Large Birds of Manly Dam</image:title>
<image:caption>Manly Dam catchment comprises a variety of vegetation communities such as Peppermint Angophora Forests and Silvertop Ash-Brown Stringybark Forests, which harbour trees mature enough for hollows to form. These hollows are excellent for nests. However, large wildfires in the area have meant that the number of large hollows is few, resulting in competition amongst many hollowing species in the catchment (Law 2021). These urban bushlands provide essential food sources for both large herbivorous and predatory birds and an important place to breed and raise young in such an urbanised area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birds - Large Birds - How are hollows formed and why are they important?</image:title>
<image:caption>Hollows are essential for many birds, significantly larger species, but how are they formed? Once a tree is over 100 years old, it is at an age that it can produce hollows. Trees younger than this are commonly too small to provide an appropriate hollow and are also resilient and healthy to factors that cause hollows to occur. After the tree section is exposed, the bark and tissue of the tree are broken down because of exposure to mould, insects and other factors. Eventually, when big enough, birds and other arboreal mammals move in. They enlarge the hollow even further with their beaks and claws. Hollows are so valuable in urban landscapes. They provide safe nesting space for so many animals. In addition, mature trees must be maintained in urban landscapes so that vulnerable birds and arboreal mammals can breed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mammals - Bats - our flying mammals - Bats of Manly Dam Sixteen species of bats were recorded across the eight sites surveyed at Manly Dam by Dr. Bradley Law. Five of these are listed as threatened species with one, the Large-eared Pied Bat (Chalinilobus dwyeri), being listed nationally as Vulnerable. The remaining four threatened species were the Large-footed Myotis (Myotis macropus), Eastern Bentwing Bat (Miniopterus oceanensis), the Little Bentwing Bat (Miniopterus australis) and the Eastern Cave Bat (Vespadelus troughtoni), all of which roost in caves or stormwater drains rather than tree hollows, noting most Australian bat species roost in tree hollows.</image:title>

<image:title>Mammals - Monotremes - Short-beaked echidna</image:title>
<image:caption>Species: Tachyglossus aculeatus Family: Tachyglossidae Conservation status: Protected These shy, slow moving, waddling animals can grow up to 40cm long and weight around 2-5kg. Adult echidnas eat ants, termites and can feast on other invertebrates such as earthworms, beetles and larvae. Residents living near Manly Dam have reported having echidnas visit their yards to dine on creatures in their compost bins and dig up ant nests. Baby echidnas are born with no spines and are called puggles and develop in their mother’s pouch. During mating season you may be lucky enough to see a ‘train’ of male echidnas in a neat line following a female. The primary threat to echidnas is habitat loss, especially the loss of fallen logs and tree stumps, and protective understorey vegetation. As they move so slowly they‘re also vulnerable to being hit by vehicles. Image and video credit: Emily Fewster</image:caption>

<image:caption>Amazing transformations Aquatic macroinvertebrates are small animals (without a backbone) that live all, or part, of their lives in water. The ones featured below have a larval or nyphal stage and spend their adult lives outside water. Many are very sensitive to pollution- which gives us a good idea of how healthy a waterway is. Pictured here is a dragonfly nymph using its extendable jaw to catch prey.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Some creeks in the Manly Dam environs have a great diversity of aquatic life, others (concerningly) are devoid of life. These aquatic creatures break down living (and decaying) plant material into forms of energy that can be consumed by other animals. They are an important part of the food chain-providing a source of nourishment for frogs, birds, reptiles and fish. Image: A frog leaps for and misses a dragonfly meal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reptiles & Frogs - Snakes - Diamond Python</image:title>
<image:caption>Species: Morelia spilota spilota Conservation Status: Protected, under pressure from habitat desctruction. Diamond Pythons have stunning yellow black and cream markings and grow to some 2-3m long. They tend to be nocturnal, slow moving animals and can sometimes be seen basking in trees during the day. They are non-venomous but can inflict a painful bite. They kill their prey, such as small mammals and lizards, by wrapping their body around them and suffocating them. Female Diamond Pythons lay their eggs then curl around them to protect them and regulate their temperature until they hatch. This maternal care is unusual in snakes.</image:caption>

The result? The resident frog list has now been doubled to 11 species of frog, including 1 threatened species! They are featured below. Yet another reason to protect this special place.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reptiles & Frogs - Frogs - Red-crowned toadlet</image:title>
<image:caption>Species: Pseudophryne australis Conservation Status: Threatened The Red-crowned Toadlet is an unmistakable small frog, usually measuring less than 30 mm long. It is dark brown to black, with distinctive reddish-orange patches, one between the eyes and one along the rump. It also has a white patch at the base of each arm. The belly is marbled black and white. The Red-crowned Toadlet is threatened by urban development. Urbanisation results directly in habitat clearance and fragmentation and indirectly, urban development degrades Red-crowned Toadlet habitat through disruption of catchment hydrology and altering the pH of the soil and the composition of plant species. To find out more about the urgency of saving frog habitat read this article featuring Dr Jodi Rowley, a frog biologist at the Australian Museum and Northern Beaches local.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reptiles & Frogs - Frogs - Why frogs count</image:title>
<image:caption>Australia has over 240 known species of frog, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. Some species are flourishing, like the Striped Marsh Frog. But others like the red-crowned toadlet have declined dramatically since the 1980s, and four have become extinct. FrogID is a national citizen science project that is helping Australian scientists learn more about what is happening to Australia’s frogs. All around the country, people are recording frog calls with nothing more than a smartphone. Want to get involved? Download the FrogID app and get counting around Manly Dam and beyond.</image:caption>

It is dark grey above, finely spotted with yellow or white, and with paired, blackish cross-bands from the neck to the end of the tail. The pairs of narrow, regular bands around the entire length of the tail is a distinguishing feature, separating it from the more common Lace Monitor V. varius, which has very wide, light and dark bands towards the tip of the tail. Rosenberg’s Goanna also has distinct, finely barred “lips”, whereas the Lace Monitor has far broader bands around the snout. A pale-edged black stripe runs from the eyes, across the ears and onto the neck. Juveniles are brighter in colour, having an orange wash on the sides of the face and body. <image:title>Reptiles & Frogs - Turtles - Eastern Long Necked Turtle</image:title>
<image:caption>Species: Chelodina longicollis Conservation status: Protected There is only one native turtle species living in Manly Dam, the Eastern Long Necked Turtle, also known as the Eastern snake-necked turtle. It is possible other species may have been introduced to the dam from the pet trade, and people should especially be on the lookout for the exotic Red-eared Slider Turtle and report any sightings to the Department of Primary Industries. The Eastern long necked turtle is carnivorous and spends most of its life submerged under the water at the edge of slow moving rivers and in wetlands and lakes. It has nostrils on the tip of its snout, so it can breathe while partially submerged in water searching for worms, snails and insect larvae. They are referred to as ‘side necked’ as they slide their neck and head under their shell to one side rather than withdrawing it backwards. If a long necked turtle feels threatened it will fold its neck sideways under its shell and spray foul smelling liquid from its groin and ‘armpits’ to deter predators.
