Birds

“Birds are often considered to be outstanding indicators of the health of the overall environment. Rather like the proverbial canary in the coalmine, they are readily affected by physical and chemical impacts on their ecosystems.”

Since records began in Manly Dam Catchment, 172 bird species have been recorded.

Over 100 citizen scientists observed and identified at least 63 species of birds using the iNaturalist app as part of the Many Dam Biodiversity Project.

There are some 17 different vegetation communities to be found in the Manly Warringah Memorial State Park ranging from tall forest to sandstone heathland and wetlands. This diversity of habitat means that Manly Dam is home (or a migratory stop over) to a large variety of species.

Two threatened species: the Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) and Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami) are found in Manly Dam.
